Crafting a Recovery

There are many ways to cope with grief of all kinds. In this case knitting.

Though I'm not a knitter myself, I can think of a number of reasons knitting could be a wonderful coping skill.

The rote almost meditative quality of knitting is soothing and probably decreases anxiety. In this case it's done in a group so the support is helpful. For people who know how to knit, it doesn't require much concentration for simple patterns. For those who don't know how to knit, focusing on learning how can be a welcome distraction.

Additionally activities like this engage the body and the conscious mind, while the unconscious mind processes whatever's going on at a deeper level. These kinds of activities create a space for new realizations and healing to emerge.
