A Child's Grief When a Pet Dies

This video is worth watching if you're a parent of a grieving child who has lost a pet.

It is a wonderful opportunity to teach a child about death, but remember young children simply can't grasp the finality of death until they're about 7.

I agree it is important to discuss the death, create rituals and let children be part of the decision about if and when to get another pet.

The only thing I might change about the recommendations is I wouldn't close a memory box to signify the end of a relationship. As anyone who is greiving can tell you, the relationship doesn't end with death. It transforms into a different kind of relationship, one that resides in the heart where all the memories live on. That's why I would use a memory box and a way of remembering the lost pet.
